What to Expect: Newborn Session

As a photographer, it is such an honor and privilege to be invited into your home to document the intimate newness and tenderness of your family. Here is a guideline for how I run my newborn sessions :)

What is a newborn session like?

When I arrive I will ask you to show me around your home. This is when I will be taking a look to see where the light is falling and which areas have the best natural light. I also take a peek at areas of the home which lend themselves to the telling of your story. I like to use bits and pieces of your family in the session. I love using a special blanket, your bed, a vintage chair, or rocker, etc.

When should I schedule my newborn session?

Contact me as soon as possible to reserve your session, preferably before 36 weeks. Once you have had your baby, call or email me and we will set a date! I stay very flexible with newborn sessions since babies have their own timeline :) I prefer to photograph babies in the first month of life to really capture your baby's newness and squishiness (did I just make up a new word?)

How long does a session take?

Newborn sessions typically take approximately 1.5-2 hours. It is a very relaxed session and we will take our time. We will take plenty of breaks for you to feed your baby or let young siblings get their wiggles out (and I love photographing the wiggles!)

What should I do before the session?

Feed your baby before right before I arrive. I spend a few minutes when I arrive looking for the best light in your home, so there is a little time for you to finishing feeding your baby or finish getting ready. Although I don't expect your house to be spotless, clearing your house of clutter will help a lot with the look of the final images.

What should I wear?

Pick what YOU want to wear first. Something light, comfortable and casual is best. Neutrals always photograph beautifully. Having said that, don't be afraid of bold colors too. I always encourage pairing simple basics with textured overlays, such as a kimono, robe, or a slouchy open sweater and then coordinate the rest of the family from there. Texture adds such a beautiful element. I recommend avoiding lettering on shirts, too many patterns and being too matchy. I love when newborns wear a simple white onesie or are swaddled in an adorable swaddle blanket (https://www.spearmintlove.com has some really adorable designs!)

Do you provide props?

I have been photographing newborns for quite some time now and I have seen a few trends come and go. I prefer to capture timeless and classic photographs of your baby that you’ll be able to treasure for years to come!

When do I get to see the photos?

Your images will be ready to be viewed within 14 business days. I will upload them to a password protected online gallery where you will be able to share with family & friends and download at your convenience.
